The Cascadian Collection Mountain Art Showcase was a complete and total success. As the night fizzled out with the last conga jam, we couldn’t wipe the grins off of our faces for the stoke that permeated the entire night. The power of creative collaboration was more apparent than ever, and we vow to continue bringing the creative flavor with shows and exhibitions like the Cascadian Collection. Thanks to all of the dedicated and talented artists, organizers, and sponsors- Backcountry Essentials, Smith Optics, First Ascent, Lustr Watches, State Street Arts, as well as WWS Boardshop and Mt. Baker Ski Area for the last minute raffle contributions, and big ups to NWAC for keeping us safe and informed in the mountains. Keep your eyes peeled for the next art party this Spring! Thanks again!

We had an impressive group of Cascadian locals exhibiting their photography, paintings,
screen printed designs and Wishbone on the turntables on Febuary 9, 2012.

We also had a silent auction to benefit our friends of NWAC and artists, a photo booth
and a prize raffle.

It was a great time and we want to thank everyone who contributed and showed up.

We had the opportunity to talk with 17-year old photographer Dylan Hallet from Boulder Colorado. Take a look at his snaps and enjoy the interview.

Q. How long have you been capturing photos?
A. I have been captivated by the lens for many years, but just started shooting with a dslr a little more than a year ago.

Q.Who/What/Where are your inspirations?
A. Local photographers such as Grant Gunderson, and Dylan Hart have provided much inspiration. It’s amazing how much you can learn my looking at other individuals work.

But I would say most of my inspiration comes from the beauty of our natural world, and capturing images of nature’s creations. I have been blessed to spend lots of time here in the PNW, as well as trips up to northern BC and Alaska, where the un-touched landscape is beyond inspiring.

Q. How long have you been snowboarding?
A. I have been snowboarding since I was 8, so that makes it 9 years.

Q. What board/skis do you ride?
A. Lib-Tech Travis Rice 164.5

Q. Favorite brands?
A. Whatever makes it possible to get out and play. But Lib-Tech makes some killer boards, and Union makes a rad binding. INNATE for the T’s, and Rime Knits for the noggin.

Q. What’s you’re favorite part about Cascadia? (if you don’t know what Cascadia is, click here).
A. All the powda from the many mountains, as well as the incredible terrain, begging to be explored.

Q. Give us some background on this recent set of photos in a few sentences.
A. Riding with good friends and great snow has enabled me to really see what one can do with a camera and a lens. This recent storm has brought some of the best snow of my life, and when the sun decides to show some of the best images as well. Most of these shots were taken in the Mt. Baker backcountry, with friends and shredders Charlie Griffith, Conlon Kiffney, and Mattias Evangelista.

Wishbone celebrated their one year anniversary last night at the Wild Buffalo and we took a couple snaps of the night while we danced.

Wishbone is comprised of DJ’s Booger and BoomBox Kid, Wishbone’s events feature live mashups, selections and remixes.

These remixes are drawn from a wide variety of genres including New Disco, Electroclash, Indy Dance, and Indie Rock…with the occasional touch of Dubstep. Despite being on the scene for only a short time, their energetic performances have inspired sold out shows and capacity crowds at venues across the Pacific Northwest. When asked to describe their sound they will invariably respond: “Electro’s the new Rock’n'Roll”.

Listen to the Opening day snow report

Winter has arrived at Mount Baker ReCreation Powder Ranch. As one would expect, it was deep, super fresh, and packed with people. It snowed nearly two feet the night before- not bad for the initial soul riding session of the season.

The morning began with a delay on chair numero uno, for the sake of all of our safety. Considering it was opening day, it was no surprise the patrol crew’s patience came in to play on opening the gates. On the other hand, it was an opportunity to drop bombs and ignite some early morning fireworks.

We ditched the wait and peeled out to Four in order to catch the top of Honkers. From there, it was on to Gabl’s and Libraries, then a few lifts up Six to straight line Canucks and check into Hotels. The bottom was shallow, which kept the flow a bit slow and the opportunity for flight subdued. With a cautious approach, we were able to enter the white room, slash some frozen waves and smash a few fur-burgers.
The resort’s website mentioned,”take ‘er easy, watch for sticks, rocks, and stumps hiding under the fluffy stuff…as anxious as you all are to be on the mountain, remember it’s still early season conditions.”

It’s only the beginning, and hopefully we’re in for a season full of cold temps and many storm cycles.

We all gathered to release, give in to gravity, and connect with our majesty–a white wonderland that lies on the foothills of a volcano. It was a celebration–a family reunion of sorts. Only to remember, each and every time we take that drive, that it’s an adventure with an incredible reward. Oh how we love la Niña. Lets pray she’s here to stay…

Thanks to the help, creative skill, and sheer man power of an amazing group of people, INNATE is back open for retail for 2 days a week on Fridays and Saturdays.

Our 9 month hiatus from retail has allowed us to realign, redesign, reconfigure the storefront and online model for business, as well as our back end production and design services.

INNATE stands true to its original intentions, to inspire, elevate and engage in an environment designed to encourage creativity and a sense of artistic empowerment. Whatever you do, INNATE hopes to encourage you to find what you love to do and do it well. Over the next few months, we hope to continue to refine our relationships with our community and how we interact with it.

The new space will be hosting an October 7th Art Walk event so be sure to stop by for another totally excellent celebration at the studio!

Thank you for your support of a vision in progress! Keep checking in on our website and at our storefront for the latest happenings, and continue spreading the good vibes!

In preparation of the reopening of INNATE we invited Max McNett to paint the front of the shop.

He spent some time on sketches and really came up with something beautiful to grace our storefront.

We jammed down to the Dakota Art Store to pick out the colors and paint.

Paint in hand Max started creating while Matt McDonald captured photos and video of the entire paint session.

The project took about 12 hours over the course of two days and we could not be more stoked on the new look of the shop.

As of today we are now officially open Friday and Saturday from 11am – 7pm to the public. Come on down to INNATE, check out the new paint and get some new inked-up threads.

A very talented artist by the name of Max McNett literally transformed the front of the INNATE into a work of art in less than 10 hours. Check out the snaps by Matt McDonald to hold you over until he finishes editing the video of the project.

The INNATE brand was conceived on this day, the 8th of August, three years ago in 2008 during the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. As a bit of background, young American swimmer Michael Phelps was attempting 8 medals in his respective events in the pool. The media made it clear that although Phelps had a great deal of talent and training, luck would need to play its role in order for him to achieve his goal. We wanted to share a bit of symbology on the number 8 and its significance to us:

- The number 8 is the luckiest of all numbers in Chinese culture.

- “The mystery of the 8 is that of eternal and continuous spiral motion, which is constant throughout the universe. The life force currents that sweep through the body in the form of a figure 8, following the cerebrospinal and sympathetic nervous systems, like radiations of light. The horizontal 8 (∞) means “as above, so below.”

- It is a symbol of power, and represents accumulation, strength, power and augmentation.

- In Indian culture, the symbology of the 8 as a word represents “worker: will revolutionize society and manifest through fame and fortune”

- The 8′s relative metal is iron, it’s body chemistry is air (vata), its Karmic lesson is kindness and forgiveness, and its profession manifests as public servants and executives.

- The number 8 is known as “the great balancer” and represents the belief that you reap what you sow.

- Furthermore, in balance, the 8 suggests the idea that all actions have consequences, AKA cause and effect.

On behalf of the INNATE crew, we’d like to say a humble “thank you” to every single individual that has supported our ideas and growth along the way.

As a recent blessing from our dear friend reads, “this business be love in action from roots to fruit, this business be an altar of prosperity & sanctuary to all who enter. This business be art, be our gifts & greatness inspired. This business evolving to revive Earth. This business, this dream, realized and alive! In remembrance, in thanks, for the good of all, this business be for people, for pleasure, for planet and for profit.”

Thank you, gracias, asante, merci, grazie, danke, arigato, mahalo. ∞

Our third stab at the beast that is printing the Legendary Banked Slalom hoodies has proven to be one of our most technical but smooth jobs yet. Mt. Baker’s marketing team gave the INNATE crew the opportunity to design the artwork for the Legendary Banked Slalom in 2009…, and designers Yale Wolf and Corey Warren brought it to life with an original piece of work that turned into a full production- 4 colors, sewn in custom tags, and color matched strings made the final product. The second year Seattle designer Rob Zwiebel tackled the art work and we were again given the opportunity to produce. This year our friend Evan Whitehead took the reigns and painted a masterpiece scene of the classic Shuksan view, swooping turns and the omnipresent raven carving turns through the air. We had our friend Kevan Hartmann at Westar Solutions separate the file into 6 colors and burn a set of fresh screens for us. Starting the job off on the right foot carried us through a smooth printing session through out the weekend. Five hundred and fifty odd hoodies, shirts, and tags later, the beast has been slain and the client is happy. Thanks Mt Baker for another amazing opportunity to be involved with the longest running, core snowboarding event in the world. Til next time…. pray for powder!

With 7 wholesome and beautiful days behind us on the road (and recently skiing off of it) the INNATE crew is relaxed and rejuvenated after a crisp evening in the Tetons. A hot meal in our bellies was luxurious after an epic afternoon of hitch hike skiing and a phenomenal sunset run off the east slope of Teton Pass, at the base of which we camped for the night.

Each time we embarked on the short hike from the car to the drop-in point we’d run into a handful of fellow mountain heads with whom we’d share a handful of patches and stickers. Lots of good peeps in this part of the world- with a simple desire to live in harmony with high altitude, fresh air and ample terrain, it’s no wonder a statement like Love your Land or Nurture your Nature resonates with folks in Tetonia, especially if it’s exchanged at the top of a fresh powder field moments before dropping in. This trip’s raw, unplanned and serendipitous encounters have allowed us to connect with like minded people on a genuine level time after time to share what we and INNATE are all about.

As I write this, we’re making plans to grub on a cowboy breakfast in the near future, and then head toward Bozeman MT and Big Sky after one more run off of Teton Pass. So far so good- cheers from the crew: Corey, Dylan, Wil, and the powder hounds Zara, Thompson, and Tye the traveler that found us in Utah. More to come…

With SLC and the Outdoor Retailer trade show behind us, not to mention two great days of skiing and some solid networking and media distribution, the VW van is packed back up with three dudes and three dogs (more on the extra dog later… Divine intervention brought him to us) and are Jackson Hole-bound for the next leg of the journey. Big huge thanks to Contour HD cameras, Smith optics, and Brighton Ski Resort for keeping us styled and dialed. More to come…. Peace from the road

“A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving…”
- Lao Tzu

Love Your Land Tour: Thursday morning we embark on an adventure with no fixed plans and no intended destination, save for the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City. We (which, I should clarify is now 3 guys and 2 dogs) will be spending a couple days roaming the floor at one of the industry’s largest outdoor lifestyle trade shows, networking and sharing a little bit of North West love in the form of patches, stickers, hoodies and t shirts. Making new connections with like minded individuals is always something that we keep on the forefront of our minds because you never know what direction a new friend might lead you. Maintaining an open mind and a freestyle mentality is our strategy for this trip.

We once heard that “luck is when proper preparation meets an unknown opportunity,” so for the last few weeks we’ve been brainstorming cheap and effective ways to market INNATE to a whole slough of different people along the way. We’ve been making calls to various resorts, business owners and artists in other mountain communities like Salt Lake, Missoula, Bozeman, Big Sky, Jackson Hole, Sun Valley, and Schweitzer Mountain, with intention to share the creativity and positive
Vibrations that we value like currency.
